Tai convinced me not to go in during the break, even though I could get SO MUCH WORK DONE WITH NOBODY THERE O___O But I guess it's good to spend some time at home with family ...and clean (although you're supposed to do all that before the new year, 'cause it'll 'sweep out the good luck' if you do it after. But you're always super-busy gettin everything done beforehand so that you can go on vacation for a week, so it really doesn't make much sense. I compromised and didn't start cleaning 'til today.)
In any case, check out this cute notebook Tai picked up for me!
We spent New Year's Eve with my paternal grandparents and cousins, and New Year Day we went to see my maternal grandfather.
On the way, we stopped by XimenDing to kill some time.
A performer makin' BANK drumming to Lady Gaga tunes.
We also picked up some lunch beforehand. Aside from businesses, most mom & pop joints are closed 'cause everyone's gone home to visit relatives. Chains like 85C are still open, and, of course, all the convenience stores stay open for the holiday.
We found a Japanese set meal place that was open.
Part of the sashimi-don (sliced fish rice bowl) set.
Their uni was actually tasty!
I've had uni in the states before and it was GROSS. I've also read that you can tell a good sushi joint by their uni, since it's the most sensitive to degradation over time.
While I can't say that this place has AWESOME sushi (the white fish was kind of stringy) it's really good for the price (NT$200), and the fish roe is AMAZING.

The rest of the set: tamagoyaki, salad, milk pudding with caramel sace and sliced almonds, and miso soup (not shown).
There was self-serve hot barley tea, white rice, condiments, and miso soup, too.
The menu. Basically you pick one of the 8 sets: grilled fish and chicken (?), braised beef bowl, shrimp tempura, braised pork bowl, fried 'cordon bleu' pork (it looked like there was cheese wrapped inside...), shrimp tempura udon & salmon sushi, grilled fish, or sashimi bowl, which comes with soup, salad, side, appetizer (edamame), and dessert, for NT$200 to eat in, or NT$150 take-out (dessert not included -- but you can get 3-4 times as much milk pudding at 7-11 for NT$25-38, so whatever.)
There are also single order items: teriyaki chicken kebabs, sesame tofu, barbeque beef cutlets, an amazing looking sashimi set, coca-cola, and beer, for various prices.
I liked it a lot :)
