Most of December, in a Nutshell

These past three weeks have been SUPER busy putting in loads of overtime -- I was put in charge of one of our VIP students for a week and a half. I'll be getting two weeks off at the beginning of February though, so that'll be nice :)

Finally had a 'normal' week this past week, but things are picking up again 'cause now I'm in charge of making the food for the company Christmas party -- more overtime yaaayyyy!!!

Anywho, here's what we've been up to in the interim~

12/07 | BATTLE OF THE BANANA BREADS CAKES!
What we call banana-bread in the states is interpreted as cake here in Taiwanland. I personally think banana-bread is pretty much cake, but I feel less guilty eating it for breakfast if I call it bread :D Besides, eating toasted cake with melted cheese on top sounds so much less appetizing. Especially when you eat two pieces *u*

Since I've been making it at the compassion field, though, it's been pretty much called cake. Steamer cake! Which is technically more like a British pudding. In any case, for some arbitrary reason my brain registers the dessert as cake when it comes out of a steamer. This works out great because eating cake for dessert sounds better than eating bread :D But enough about semantics.

Someone bought banana cake for one of the American chi-mates, and there was an unplanned contest between the two cakes. Never mind they are technically in different categories due to method of preparation.
The baked contender.

The steamed champion.
Yep. In a blind taste test this one won out :D
I think it has to do with the sugar-crusted bottom, which provides textural contrast and eases release from the pan while also adding extra DELICIOUSNESS.

12/09 | Went to Xinzhu after work for a one-day workshop.

There were many shenanigans on the train, but those are all on Ingting's camera.

A picture of an empty bottle used to contain super-delicious chocolate milk.
An orange!
I was really hungry after getting there, and one of the other girls gave me an orange!
Oranges in Taiwan are not necessarily orange, btw.
Turns out mottled green is a perfectly healthy color for an orange.
This one was delicious!

12/10 | 1-day Youth Workshop.

It was a fruitful day of meditating and food in copious amounts.

Align CenterThere was a camel at the train station on the way home.

12/11 | Tina's Birthday Dinner!
Birthday girl

CO-WORKERS~!
EGGPLANT!
Unfortunately, there was also pork in it.

Ordering off the menu!
Steamed broccoli...with bonus tomatoes!
Stack of asparagus!
It incited the desire to make a log cabin out of asparagus stems.
Also, that sesame sauce was TO DIE FOR.
I drowned my rice in it (after all the asparagus was consumed, naturally) and the result defies description in a good way, obviously.

This fish looks like it was prepared exactly like that other fish.
But it's not.
One of them tastes better.
Unfortunately, I don't remember which one O.o
The not-sweet one. Yeah. That one.

Creamy taro sprinkled with black sesame. DIVINE.

12/13 | DAY OFF!!! :)

Remember this flower from last time?
It's still here.

Pine tree!
The flash makes it look like it might almost have frost on it!

Pink lily!

Single-Serving Pumpkin-Seed-Chooclate-Chip Cookie Bar for breakfast!

Another shot of that same flower.

12/15 | Christmas Shopping!

The breakfast of champions = 1/4 c. oatmeal + 1 egg + 6 almonds + 6 blueberries + 1 t. black sugar + 1 min. in the microwave.

After picking up Tai's paycheck we walked around all the underground malls at Taipei Main Station: Y, R, Z, and X...? I don't remember the letter for the other one. The naming system makes no sense -- R is Zhongshan Metro Mall, so you'd think they'd call that one Z, but Z is Station Front Mall...or something to that effect...and I don't even know why Y is Y. Or whatever. O_O And don't get me started on how they correspond to the Chinese names D:< Oh, yeah, and there's Q-square, too, which you can get to from the underground mall system, but is actually it's own separate mall. WHY SO CONFUSING TAIPEI?!

In any case, we got super-turned around at least twice.

Vegetarian Stone-Bowl Rice from a Korean place in Y.
It doesn't exist on the menu; I just asked for the chicken one without meat.
SUPER-DELICIOUS but greasy!
I felt kind of sick afterwards.
Granted, I did consume a RIDICULOUSLY GOOD strawberry whole-fruit juice on an empty stomach right before.
And I ate too much. But it was so good!
The crispy rice bits!!! And pea sprouts!

Blueberry Yogurt Gelato Parfait from 78 Style.
Or 79 Style.
I don't quite remember the number; they were in Z(?), across from McDonald's
They had delicious-looking honey toast for NT$120; I want to try it!

12/16 | Chillin' at home before work!

More Breakfast of Champions!

Also, VERMONT Apple Curry with Chickpeas!
Vermont is a famous brand of Japanese curry. It is credited with transforming curry from an adult food to the Japanese equivalent of mac and cheese. This was achieved by making curry not spicy (a.k.a. 'mild) and adding apples, for sweetness. It's called Vermont because around that time Dr. Vermont came out with some study about apples being good for you.

I made this curry because we didn't have onions, which is what usually provides the sweetness in curry.

It was SUPER delicious! But next time, I think I will slice the apples into slivers instead of just thin wedges, so they are more like onion pieces.

--

Tomorrow I will go to work and make pies and gingerbread cookies and mashed potatoes and wash all of the veggies ever! And see how my cheesecake turned out O_O There were some tiny cream cheese bits going in (mixing by hand = hard work!), and one crack after baking. Let's hope it survived the cooling process!
